EFFECT OF BIOFEEDBACK DEVICES IN PARTIAL WEIGHT-BEARING ORTHOPAEDIC PATIENTS. Joshua W Hustedt, Michael R Baumgaertner, Michael P Leslie, Jonathan N Grauer. Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Partial weight-bearing (PWB) instructions are commonly given to orthopaedic patients. However, the ability of patients to comply with these instructions is poorly defined. Recent advances in technology have created biofeedback devices capable of offering real-time feedback to patients given PWB instructions. These devices could potentially increase patient compliance with PWB instructions following orthopaedic surgery. This thesis was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of modulating partial weight-bearing using the SmartStep biofeedback device. Fifty asymptomatic subjects aged 21-72 years were given three educational interventions designed to train them to limit weight-bearing on a lower extremity: verbal instructions, training with a bathroom scale, and training with a biofeedback device. Weight-bearing was measured after each activity to determine the effectiveness of biofeedback as compared to other clinical teaching methods. Additionally, another 14 subjects were given biofeedback training and retention was measured over a 24-hour period to assess retention of biofeedback training. Subjects given only verbal touch down weight-bearing instructions (25lbs) initially bore an average of 61.25± 4.80lbs (average ± standard error). This was reduced

Current Advances in Training Orthopaedic Patients to Comply with Partial Weight-Bearing Instructions
Partial weight-bearing instructions are commonly given to orthopaedic patients and are an important part of post-injury and/or post-operative care. However, the ability of patients to comply with these instructions is poorly defined. Training methods for instructing these patients vary widely among institutions. Traditional methods of training include verbal instruction and use of a bathroom sc...
متن کاملEffect of age on partial weight-bearing training.
Biofeedback devices are increasingly used to train orthopedic patients to comply with partial weight-bearing instructions for an injured or postoperative extremity. In a previous study, the authors showed that biofeedback was effective in training young participants. However, because many partial weight-bearing orthopedic patients are of advanced age, the current study was designed to test the ...
متن کاملIs it possible to train patients to limit weight bearing on a lower extremity?
Orthopedic patients are often instructed on how much weight to bear on an injured or postoperative extremity. Although specific weight-bearing instructions are given to a majority of lower-extremity orthopedic patients, the ability of patients to comply with these instructions is questioned in the medical literature. This study compared the effectiveness of new forms of clinical interventions d...
متن کاملBiofeedback in Partial Weight Bearing: Usability of Two Different Devices from a Patient’s and Physical Therapist’s Perspective
BACKGROUND Partial weight bearing is frequently instructed by physical therapists in patients after lower-limb trauma or surgery. The use of biofeedback devices seems promising to improve the patient's compliance with weight-bearing instructions. SmartStep and OpenGo-Science are biofeedback devices that provide real-time feedback. For a successful implementation, usability of the devices is a c...

Orthopedic rehabilitation is very important for ensuring the best outcomes of treatment for musculoskeletal disorders and disabilities, especially in terms of hip fracture in old-aged patients. This field of research attempts to maximize the use of biomechanics and biology to improve functional outcomes and the overall well-being of patients. Orthopedic rehabilitation is a very important part o...
